2013 PHIN Messaging Guide for Syndromic Surveillance: Release 1.9

ISDS, in collaboration and with the support of CDC, developed an update to the PHIN Messaging Guide for Syndromic Surveillance. This revision includes specifications for messaging EHR information from Emergency Department, Urgent Care and Inpatient settings to public health authorities (PHAs). The inpatient specifications are a new addition and result from the 2012 ISDS Recommendations for Inpatient settings.

2012 ISDS Recommendations – Inpatient and Ambulatory

The ISDS Meaningful Use Workgroup’s Recommendations provide clarity for Stage 2 Meaningful Use, when ongoing syndromic surveillance reporting will be required for eligible hospitals. These Recommendations provide a basis for planning and establishing data use relationships between Public Health Agencies and eligible professionals, while also building upon prior ISDS work by incorporating both lessons learned and broader stakeholder participation.

2011 ISDS Recommendations – Emergency Department and Urgent Care

The ISDS Meaningful Use Workgroup’s Recommendations describe the core business processes of public health syndromic surveillance (PHSS) in detail. Rendered as a generalized model, the critical tasks and decision points that consecutively produce PHSS information are drawn and explained from the perspective of an PHSS analyst. Referencing the process diagrams and task descriptions will be useful during Meaningful Use implementation.
