Presenter

Alex Elliot:

Alex Elliot is the National Scientist Lead for Syndromic Surveillance in England. He jointly leads the Public Health England Real-time Syndromic Surveillance Team where he has led the development of a national syndromic surveillance service including the first UK emergency department syndromic surveillance system. His research interests include improving the use of syndromic surveillance data for the monitoring of influenza and other respiratory pathogens.

Description

In this webinar, the syndromic surveillance service delivered by Public Health England will be discussed. The presentation will describe the national syndromic surveillance systems used in England (general practitioners, emergency departments, telehealth call services), the routine statistical and analytical methods used to process the data, the ‘service’ delivered by the team and future data sources under consideration. The presentation will have a particular focus on the integration of syndromic surveillance data into the public health system in England, describing the use of risk assessments for prioritising statistical exceedances and alerting public health teams to help prevent, or control, public health incidents. The talk will use the heatwave syndromic surveillance undertaken in England to illustrate how syndromic surveillance data are integrated into the national Heatwave Plan for England.
